Storm optimistic after first contest

Dixie State University women’s soccer team beat Heat 99 Football Club, a Las Vegas based high school prospects team, 2-1 Friday night.

Both teams remained scoreless for much of the first half until Aubri Detmer, a junior from Austin, Texas, broke the scoreless tie when she put a ball into the mesh behind the goal keeper in the 36th minute. DSU took a 1-0 lead over Heat 99 FC into halftime.

In the 63rd minute, DSU went up by a pair when sophomore forward Darian McCloy blasted a shot past two Heat 99 FC defenders that trickled past the goalkeeper and into the net.

Heat 99 FC mounted somewhat of a comeback, forcing DSU to play in its own end for much of the last 20 minutes of regulation. In the 81st minute, the lead was cut to one goal after DSU’s sophomore goal keeper Danica Nusink missed a save that resulted in a Heat 99 FC goal. Heat 99 FC had a break away late in the game and got off a shot that had Nusink beat, but the shot went inches wide, thus preserving DSU’s victory.

“No excuses,” defender Montana Tanner, a sophomore accounting major from Bountiful, said. “We have all the pieces, we just have to piece it all together. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be [a great team]. Our first goal is conference champions, and [our second goal] is to make post play.”

Freshman forward Lizzie Newman, a general education major, echoed Tanner’s mantra.

“Our team goal is no excuses,” Newman said. “Everything we do, we don’t have any excuses for. We want to work hard on the field as well as in the classroom.”
